Essential, Signature, or Premier: Choosing the Right Piano Care Plan

Eathan Janney, Floating Piano Factory  ·   ·  3 min read

One of the most common questions we get from new Chicago clients is simply: which service level is right for me? The honest answer depends less on the piano itself and more on how you use it, and what level of consistency and attention you want behind it. Here’s how to think it through.

It Starts With How You Use Your Piano

  • Occasional or casual playing — a piano that gets played a few times a week, mostly for enjoyment, generally needs less intensive service than an instrument in daily professional or teaching use.
  • Regular practice or teaching — pianos in active daily use, especially in teaching studios, go out of adjustment faster and benefit from more frequent, closer attention.
  • Performance or professional use — instruments used for recording, performance, or serious practice benefit from the highest level of care and the most proactive attention to touch and tone, not just pitch.

What Changes Between Tiers

While the specifics of each tier are best confirmed when you book, the general distinction across our Essential, Signature, and Premier service levels comes down to three things:

  1. Frequency — how often the piano is seen and adjusted over the course of a year.
  2. Depth of service — tuning alone versus tuning combined with regulation, voicing, and closer attention to the action.
  3. Level of attention and communication — more comprehensive service levels come with more proactive scheduling, more detailed notes on the instrument’s condition, and closer tracking of how the piano is changing over time.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • How often is the piano actually played, and by whom?
  • Is tone and touch quality important to you, or mainly pitch accuracy?
  • Do you want to think about scheduling yourself, or have it handled proactively?
  • Is this a piano you’re maintaining for the long term, or the near term?

It’s Not About Spending More — It’s About Matching the Instrument

A well-loved family upright played occasionally doesn’t need the same level of service as a concert grand in daily professional use — and there’s no reason to over-service an instrument. The goal of tiered service is matching the level of care to what the piano and the player actually need, not upselling everyone to the top tier.

The Bottom Line

The right service level is the one that matches how seriously and how often the piano is played. If you’re not sure where you land, that’s a normal starting point — we’re glad to walk through it with you.
